‘Cheyne’ 21 Redmyre Road is built on Lot 62 of the Kings Estate.
The land was sold by King and Balmain to Eliza Watts, wife of Alfred Stroud Watts, a commercial traveller on 21 September 1905. A notice dated December 1905 in the Sydney Morning Herald record that contracts for the erection of a cottage on the King Estate Strathfield were let by architects Harry Kent and Henry Budden, trading as the firm of Kent & Budden, for builder J Latish. It is possible that this contract may relate to this building based on comparisons of building dates of houses on this estate.
The 1906-07 Strathfield Council valuation records note that a house is in course of construction. The house was named ‘Cheyne’, which is the name of a previous residence owned by Alfred Watts in Broughton Road Strathfield.
The house was sold c.1912 to Henry Vale JP, a manufacturer, who resided in the house until 1924. ‘Cheyne’ was then sold to Mrs Eva Derrin.
In March 1935, the house was sold by Mrs Eva Derrin to Mrs Evelyn Finley for £2250. Mrs Finlay sold the house in October 1937 to George Lightbody Thomson, grazier, for £2250. In January 1942, the house was sold by Thomson to Richard Harper, dental surgeon, for £2250.
