Hammersmith Road Homebush West

By Cathy Jones

Hammersmith Road Homebush West is one of the streets which virtually disappeared when Sydney Markets at Homebush West was constructed in the early 1970s and homes surrounding the site were acquired for expansion of the new markets. Streets such as Austin Avenue, Kerruish Avenue, Potts Street and Hudson Avenue have virtually disappeared or exist in name only as an entry point to the Markets.

The Strathfield Council Planning Map was prepared in the mid-1960s for the 1969 Strathfield Planning Scheme Ordinance and shows outlines of the land allotments located on Hammersmith Road at this time.  By 1971, land was acquired for the redevelopment of the produce markets and Hammersmith Road was rezoned for this purpose.

The aerial photograph below is dated c.1947 and features Hammersmith Road and other streets which have since changed use.

The Sands Directory of 1931 recorded the following occupants living in Hammersmith Road in 1930-1931.

Some caution should be taken in researching past occupancy as the street was renumbered in 1959 and all house numbers were changed in this street.
