Old No. 1 Mortuary Station Rookwood

Rookwood Cemetery Searches

Rookwood Cemetery is located on the western boundary of Strathfield Local Government Area.  Many residents of the Strathfield district are buried at Rookwood Cemetery.  Access to cemetery records is useful for researching family history of persons associated with the Strathfield district.

Locating historic sites

The Society of Australian Genelogists managed a project between 1981 and 1992 to transcribe information contained on headstones at Rookwood Cemetery.  This resulted in the publication of a searchable database on CD-Rom.  This is available for purchase but is also available in many local studies collections in public libraries.  Recently, access is available through paid subscription to sites such as http://www.findmypast.com.au

Copies of old layout maps of the Anglican Old Section, Catholic Mortuary 1 Sections 2, 3 & 4, Catholic Mortuary 2, 3 & 4, Independent Old Ground Map, Jewish Layout map, Presbyterian Layout map and Presbyterian Section 1 D map are available online from the Society of Australian Genelogists. 1. I am looking for the grave of my great great grandparents son John Garrod who I believe is buried in Rookwood Cemetery. His parents were Ellen (Purcell) and Robert Garrod. As I have been told he was buried there because they could not afford to bring him home to Tasmania to bury him. He was born in 1855 in Hamilton Tasmania and died in the 1880s? 2

    1. You may want to contact Rookwood Crematorium on 9746 8945 and ask if they have a record. I do t know if a map will help, there must be thousands of cremations carried out there.
